Matt gave us some great insight on how we can stay healthy, no matter the circumstances. We discussed his approach to diet and fitness, as well as his meal prep business and more!
Matthew Dylan Diana is an American vocalist, musician, song writer, and mostly recognized as the lead singer of Message to the Masses. He is the only remaining original member. Message to the Masses got signed back in 2015 to Artery Recordings, since then they have toured and put out multiple singles. However, Matt’s passion for music has grown more than ever and he has decided to continue the band but, also begin his career as a solo artist. He has spent a good portion of his free time this year preparing and fine tuning his upcoming EP called, “Disasterpiece”. Within this multi-genre EP, he as stretched his abilities as a singer in many directions, where as the material goes from heavy metal to soft pop. As far as his personal life, he runs a meal prep business, eats extremely healthy, and goes to the gym on the daily. Nothing stops him from being relentless with anything he’s passionate in life.
Matt has a meal prep company called Stay Naked Fit, where he and his business partners create meals for clients. They are expanding to take advantage of their reach by getting involved with fitness as well.
Having his band on a kind of hiatus, Matt decided to go solo and is experiencing his first shows as a solo artist without a band behind him. His band, Message To The Masses (MTTM) has had material to release for a while, but does not want to waste it on a poorly promoted release and is seeking the right circumstances in which to do so.
Matt spoke about the utility in having his own recording setup to save time and money by being able to prepare things for production.
For his meal prep he bas been using an app called MyFitnessPal, which helps him keep track of nutrients and calories for food his and his clients food. He logs everything that he eats. He also uses a macronutrient calculator to take an individual’s measurements and create a proper plan for them.
To market his company, Matt has done some cross promotion by giving away free meals to band’s such as Escape The Fate, in exchange they would promote his brand and wear his merchandise.
Before going on tour, Matt did his research to find out where he can find gyms on the road to stay fit. He is enrolled into 24 Hour Fitness and Anytime Fitness, the latter of which was a reliable gym all all over the country for him while touring. The gym also gave him a great place to shower and freshen up for the show, especially when the band had to sleep in the van.
Matt had access to a kitchen at least once a week on his last tour and would make trips to the grocery store to cook for the week. He would store his meals in a cooler with ice that he would refill and ended up eating very clean and saving a lot of money. He added a microwave to the van using a converter to heat the meals.
Sometimes his band stayed in hotels, but they also traveled in a 16-passenger van with a trailer. The van was modified with some seating removed to have memory foam cushions to sleep on. It also had a television mounted. Matt admits sleep is very important and he did suffer some sleep loss on tour but dealt with it. Having a healthy diet and training helped him make up for some of the sleep loss.
He prefers some high intensity training while on the road to save time.
We discussed that there are different body types and that some people will have to eat more to gain muscle or less to lose fat respectively. You have to get to know your body.
Matt stays away from substances and unhealthy foods by viewing them as simply inedible.
Although he generally eats clean, Matt shared his love for donuts and said that eating them around his workout has been a safe way to avoid fat gain and maximize benefit from it. Since he does it so rarely, he has a big insulin response to them which ends up helping his workout or giving him a good pump.
Matt partied earlier in his 20’s and at this point follows a pretty strict schedule for at least five days a week. He realized that he will only go as far as how hard he works. He takes some days off to recoup as well.
His inspiration comes to him when he has something to work on. He usually starts writing his songs with the chorus and fills in the rest from there.
He believes in training every morning because it primes him for a great day.
Matt reflected on how after building his company with his partner, there are all kinds of people getting in contact with and wanting to work with them.
To market his music effectively, Matt is planning to release the song of a record as consecutive singles and only then release the whole album or EP. This way every song can generate buzz and build up to his eventual full release.
On relationships, Matt voiced how great it is when his friends and family come out to his shows.
Going forward, Matt and his business partners really want to grow the business and open multiple locations. He wants to take it to a place where he can manage his business from the road while touring.
Having hope is primary for Matt. He has had this sentiment for a while and even wrote a song with that name. He says that the end game is people getting value from him doing what he loves to do.
Matt’s message to all musician's is that consistency is key and to never give up. This has helped him in all areas of his life. He goes on that you should never let anyone change your mind about your dreams or your beliefs. Matt basically preaches self responsibility.
